Police said the injured homeowner escaped before the armed suspect barricaded himself inside the house.
OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio — Two people died and one woman was injured after a domestic shooting Wednesday evening near Brentwood Drive and Bagley Road led to an hours-long SWAT standoff, Olmsted Falls police said.
Police said the shooting involved an ex-boyfriend, his mother and his ex-girlfriend, who owned the home. Officers were called at about 5:53 p.m. to 26750 Bagley Road after a report of gunfire. The case remains under investigation by local police, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner.
When officers arrived, they found a critically injured woman outside the home. Police identified her as the suspect’s mother. Officers gave aid before she was taken to Southwest General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The homeowner, described by police as the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, had fled to a nearby residence for help. She was treated for injuries police said were not life-threatening and later taken to Southwest General Hospital.
The armed suspect stayed inside the home and refused to speak with officers, police said. Multiple agencies responded, including the Southwest Enforcement Bureau SWAT team. Officers spent hours trying to contact the man before entering the home. Police said he was found dead in the basement from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The city said no officers fired their weapons during the response.
The shooting closed a section of Bagley Road through the night as police secured the area and investigators worked at the scene. The road reopened before 6 a.m. Thursday. Authorities had not released the names of the people involved as of Thursday morning, and police had not said what led to the shooting.
Investigators were expected to review evidence from the home, witness accounts and medical examiner findings. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was assisting, while the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner worked to confirm causes of death. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
The neighborhood near Brentwood Drive and Bagley Road saw a large police presence for several hours, with emergency vehicles staged near the home. By Thursday morning, the standoff had ended, the roadway had reopened and police were still working to complete the timeline of the shooting.
