Deputies said the case began with a call about an accidental shooting.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman were found dead Monday after an hourslong barricade situation at a west Harris County apartment complex, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
Deputies were called at 1:52 p.m. to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of Katy Gap Road after a man told dispatchers he had accidentally shot his girlfriend. The response grew into a SWAT operation after the man did not cooperate with deputies.
Gonzalez said the man stayed inside the apartment for several hours while deputies and SWAT members surrounded the unit. Aerial video from the scene showed a large law enforcement presence around the complex as officers worked to contain the area and keep nearby residents away from danger.
The sheriff’s office said SWAT members later deployed gas into the apartment. Deputies said the man moved to a balcony and suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies fired their weapons during the incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
After the standoff ended, deputies found the woman dead inside the apartment. Authorities have not released the names of either person. The sheriff’s office also has not said whether investigators have confirmed the man’s statement that the first shooting was accidental.
The deaths remain under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators are expected to review the 911 call, evidence from inside the apartment and statements from deputies who responded to the scene.
Officials have not announced charges because both people connected to the incident were found dead. The sheriff’s office said there was no report that deputies were injured, and no continuing threat to the public was reported after the scene was secured.
