Two-day window haunts search for missing Blue Island father

Relatives seek new camera footage after Nov. 24–26 sightings; police continue to review tips.

BLUE ISLAND, Ill. — A month after Daniel “Dan” Davis, 59, disappeared, investigators and volunteers are focused on a tight window between a pre-dawn walk from a Merrionette Park bar and the last neighborhood video near St. Donatus Parish. The timeline spans from a Nov. 24 vehicle crash to the final Nov. 26 images that show a man believed to be Davis moving through residential blocks.

The stakes are immediate for a family that says Davis has no history of disappearing and is well known in the south suburbs. Chicago police are leading the investigation, while Blue Island and Merrionette Park agencies have assisted in searches on the ground and on the water. The family’s push now centers on uncollected doorbell or security video that might show where he turned after the last clip on Nov. 26, with a $500 reward offered to find footage that fills the gap.

According to relatives and police, Davis was in a crash on Nov. 24 while driving to work at 115 Bourbon Street in Merrionette Park. He refused medical care and later left the bar on foot in the early hours of Nov. 25. Cameras then recorded a man matching his description wandering through yards and alleys south of 127th Street. “It’s been very odd being surrounded by everyone’s normal Christmas joy,” his daughter, Wendy Davis, said earlier this week, describing a month spent canvassing neighborhoods and calling hospitals. Video from Nov. 26 near St. Donatus Parish remains the last confirmed sighting.

So far, there are no confirmed transactions, pings or messages after the last footage. Family members say his phone appears to be off and his cards have not been used. A scent-tracking dog followed a trail toward a fenced rail yard and lost it, relatives said. Early on, rescuers used a boat and sonar to check the Cal-Sag Channel, but nothing surfaced. Police have not announced evidence of foul play, and the case remains a missing person investigation. Davis is 5 feet 8 inches tall and about 170 pounds, partially bald with some gray hair and brown eyes, last seen in a black cap, black Harley-Davidson jacket, red sweatshirt and black jeans.

Community involvement has widened the search grid. Volunteers printed route maps, divided corridors into zones and organized evening canvasses that start at the crash site, pass the bar and loop back toward parish blocks where cameras last recorded movement. A vigil earlier in December drew co-workers and patrons from the venue, who described Davis as reliable and quiet. Neighbors replaced weather-worn flyers on utility poles and asked businesses to save video archives from the holiday week in case detectives request copies later.

Detectives are rechecking timestamps from Nov. 24–26 against submitted clips and traffic cameras. The family’s reward targets video recorded after Nov. 26, hoping to extend the map beyond the parish area. Investigators are also reviewing hospital logs and shelter intakes. Depending on leads, police could conduct another focused search of the Cal-Sag banks and nearby industrial lots next week. Relatives plan another large canvass after New Year’s, with volunteers assigned to camera requests, alley sweeps and hospital checks.

On the ground, the case feels personal. “He’s somebody who never missed a day of work,” a co-worker said during the vigil, noting Davis’ routine between home, work and a small circle of friends. Neighbors who joined the grid search described looking under porches, along embankments and near the tracks. As winter tightens, searchers have adjusted hours for daylight and safety, while organizers keep a steady rotation of volunteers to revisit blocks where fresh video might emerge.

As of Saturday night, there is no announced breakthrough. The next planned step is a weekend canvass and continued review of late-November footage, with any significant update expected after New Year’s if new video or witness accounts surface.
