CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The trial of Andre Grier, one of three individuals charged in connection with the murder of key shooting witness Bianca Horton, progressed on Tuesday as more testimony was presented. Horton was set to provide crucial evidence against Cortez Sims, a gang member associated with the Athens Park Bloods, in a case stemming from a shooting that left her young daughter paralyzed in 2015.
Prosecutors contend that Grier killed Horton in May 2016 to prevent her from testifying. Jurors heard from several witnesses, including one individual who said she was babysitting Horton’s children the night she went missing. The babysitter recalled receiving a text from Horton around 10:30 p.m., indicating she was on her way home. Later that evening, the babysitter reported seeing Horton’s car parked in the lot but noted that Horton never returned.
The court was shown surveillance footage from the Stone Ridge Apartments, where Horton lived. The video captured several figures before the camera was disabled on May 21. An apartment manager indicated that the footage also revealed equipment used to operate the complex’s gates, which showed signs of tampering.
Horton’s body was discovered a few days later on May 25 in a remote, muddy area near two trees, according to Tracy McGhee from the Chattanooga Police Crime Scene Unit. Witnesses, some of whom remain unnamed for safety reasons, took the stand but could not provide substantial details regarding the case. Among them were Chattanooga police officers, one of whom responded to the report of Horton’s disappearance.
Defense attorneys took the opportunity to highlight inconsistencies between earlier statements given by witnesses to law enforcement and their current testimonies, indicating potential issues with the reliability of the accounts presented.
Safety remains a primary concern during the trial, given that prosecutors assert Horton was specifically targeted due to her role as a key witness in a gang-related homicide. The judge has implemented measures to protect certain witnesses, limiting the details that can be publicly shared during the proceedings.
