LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An explosion involving a hydrogen conversion tank at the AAK facility in Shively has initiated an investigation by the Louisville Metro Arson Bureau. The explosion occurred on Sunday shortly after 12:30 p.m., prompting multiple emergency calls from witnesses in the area.
Responding to the alert, firefighters arrived at the scene to find that one person had been fatally injured in the blast. The cause of the explosion has been linked to a tank conversion process that was underway at the time. While certain operations at the plant were halted following the incident, AAK has not disclosed which sections were affected.
AAK, known for producing a variety of vegetable oils and fats, faced a similar situation last December when a hydrogen leak was associated with a malfunctioning conversion tank. Investigators from the Shively Fire Department originally identified a cooking oil leak from a faulty gasket that ignited and led to a fire in an exterior tank. This recent incident is not connected to the previous one, according to AAK spokesperson Carl Ahlgren.
In a separate incident in 2013, an overflow tank filled with vegetable oil exploded but fortunately did not result in any injuries. Ahlgren reiterated that the tanks involved in the different incidents are distinct, emphasizing the company’s commitment to safety.
Following Sunday’s explosion, AAK issued a statement expressing their dedication to understanding the circumstances surrounding the incident and emphasizing their focus on preventing future occurrences. “Safety is AAK’s top priority,” the company stated, reaffirming its responsibility in safeguarding both employees and operations.
While the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives typically investigates workplace explosions, the agency has not been involved in this case. Meanwhile, the local branch of the Service Employees International Union has confirmed that the victim was not a member, expressing condolences to the affected family and offering support in navigating safety concerns within the workplace.
SEIU State Director Robert Smith highlighted the union’s commitment to ensuring that safety measures will be addressed to prevent such tragedies from happening again. AAK’s Ahlgren mentioned that the company is considering various ways to assist the victim’s family during this challenging time.
As the investigation continues, both AAK and local authorities are focused on uncovering the details surrounding the incident. The community remains on alert as officials work diligently to ensure that proper safety measures are in place to protect workers in the future.
