COLUMBIA, Mo. – A man from Warrensburg died following a shooting incident early Wednesday morning connected to a domestic disturbance. The 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base confirmed that one of its airmen was involved.
Authorities revealed that Warrensburg Police received multiple reports of a domestic disturbance on Cedar Drive around 7:20 a.m. Eyewitnesses reported the suspect was armed and fled toward Hale Lake Road. Upon the officers’ arrival, it was reported that the suspect fired shots in their direction.
Tony Barron, a bystander trying to help during the incident, was fatally shot by the suspect before law enforcement could intervene, police indicated. When search teams later found the suspect in a nearby wooded area at around 8:36 a.m., he was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
No officers were injured during the confrontation, and police did not return fire. The female victim involved in the domestic disturbance received treatment at the Western Missouri Medical Center and has since been released.
The investigation is ongoing, with police officials withholding the suspect’s identity until at least 24 hours after family members have been notified, in accordance with military regulations.
Warrensburg School District officials were alerted to the situation and responded swiftly. Superintendent Steve Ritter informed parents that nearby Warrensburg High School was placed on lockdown, along with other schools in the vicinity, to ensure student safety.
As police addressed the situation, Maple Grove Elementary was mentioned as a location of concern, prompting interim lockdown measures and changes to bus routes for affected students. Once it was deemed safe, students were returned to their original schools.
An advisory was sent to students at the University of Central Missouri when the threat was deemed contained, confirming no further danger existed in the area. The Johnson County Emergency Management Agency also reported that numerous local roadways around the scene, including East Hale Lake Road and Ridgeview Drive, had been temporarily closed but have since reopened.
Multiple agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, and Warrensburg Fire Department, assisted with the incident response.
