Tragic Outburst of Violence in Arkansas: Three Dead, Ten Injured in Fordyce Grocery Store Shooting

Fordyce, AR – Tragedy struck a local grocery store parking lot in Fordyce, Arkansas, where three people were killed and ten others injured in a mass shooting on Friday. Among the wounded were two law enforcement officers, though their injuries are reported as non-life-threatening, according to state police.

The incident occurred outside the Mad Butcher grocery store shortly before noon. State Police units were quickly dispatched to the scene at 11:38 a.m., engaging in a gunfire exchange with the suspect upon arrival.

Eyewitnesses captured chilling scenes on video, showing a man, later identified as 44-year-old Travis Eugene Posey from New Edinburg, Arkansas, wielding a shotgun and opening fire toward officers.

The confrontation left eight civilians with varying injuries, ranging from non-life-threatening to extremely critical conditions. Mike Hagar, Director of Arkansas Department of Public Safety, assured the public in a press briefing that the situation had been contained, emphasizing that there were no further threats to community safety.

Posey was apprehended following the shootout and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being taken into custody. He faces charges of capital murder.

The chaotic scene spread fear among local residents and bystanders. David Rodriguez, who found himself at a nearby gas station when the gunfire erupted, described the initial sounds as akin to fireworks. As realization set in, he recorded the distressing events on his cellphone, capturing the immediate aftermath outside the grocery store.

Ken Vanderzwalm, a former police officer who now works at a nearby lawn mower supply store, described the influx of scared customers seeking refuge in his shop. “We had a lot of kids who were really traumatized,” Vanderzwalm recounted, adding that for a moment, it seemed similar to a harrowing scene from a television drama with continuous gunfire.

Responding to the crisis, Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed her condolences and support over social media, thanking first responders and law enforcement for their swift action.

The federal response included agents from the ATF’s New Orleans field office, who provided assistance at the scene. The White House also acknowledged the quick actions of law enforcement officers who engaged the suspect, stating that federal law enforcement was aiding the local investigation.

This incident is among a disturbing trend of mass shootings at public spaces such as grocery stores, highlighting a continuous national issue. Previously, similar tragedies have unfolded in other states, drawing widespread sorrow and calling for renewed discussions on public safety and gun control measures.

As the community of Fordyce grapples with the aftermath, support continues to pour in from across the state and country. The focus remains on the recovery of the injured and providing aid to those affected by this traumatic event.
