Tragic Incident: Eight Students Injured in Transformer Explosion at Brahmanbaria Women’s Madrassah

Brahmanbaria, Bangladesh — A tragic incident struck a women’s madrassah on Wednesday afternoon when an electrical transformer explosion led to injuries for eight students. The explosion occurred around 3:45 p.m. at Darul Najat Women’s Madrasa, as students engaged in classes on the building’s fourth floor.

The young victims, ranging in age from 6 to 30, included Sadia Akter, Rubaiya, Ayman, Nusrat, Alia, Tuiba, Rowza, and Afrin. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the transformer, situated adjacent to the madrassah, exploded unexpectedly, sending flames into the classroom and causing severe burns to the students.

Md Anwar, an uncle of one of the injured students, Afrin, described the chaos that ensued as locals rushed to aid the victims. They quickly transported the affected students to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for urgent medical attention.

Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the burn center, reported that the students sustained varying degrees of burns, with severity ranging from 2 to 14 percent of their bodies. Fortunately, five of the students received treatment and have since been discharged, while three others remain under observation in the emergency department.

Authorities are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the transformer failure. Community members have expressed their concerns regarding safety measures at schools and the implications of outdated electrical systems. Local officials are urged to evaluate nearby structures and establish regulations to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

The incident raises important questions about infrastructure safety in educational institutions, particularly in areas where many rely on older systems. As the community rallies to support the injured students, parents and residents are calling for enhanced safety protocols and infrastructure upgrades to ensure the protection of children in such environments.

The recovery process is underway for the injured, as the community bands together, hoping for their swift return to health and safety in their places of learning.
