Tragic Family Feud Ends in Double Fatal Shooting at Starkville Motel

Starkville, MS — A violent shooting at a local hotel Thursday morning resulted in the deaths of two men, escalating from a domestic dispute that involved a woman, her boyfriend, and her cousin. The incident unfolded at the Quality Inn on MS-12, where authorities pronounced Veshawn Williams, 25, from Columbus, and Robert Mayfield, 27, from Memphis, dead from gunshot wounds.

Starkville Police Department officials reported the shooting occurred amid a quarrel involving Williams, who was sought by Columbus Police for kidnapping and aggravated assault charges, his girlfriend, and her cousin Mayfield. Police have withheld the identity of the woman involved.

Authorities responded to the scene at approximately 11:04 a.m. following multiple emergency calls. Upon arrival, officers discovered Williams in the motel’s parking lot and Mayfield a short distance away at State Urgent Care. Both men were quickly transported to OCH Regional Medical Center but succumbed to their injuries.

At a press briefing, Sgt. Brandon Lovelady detailed the grim series of events leading to the fatalities. According to Lovelady, the deadly exchange erupted after Williams stepped out of the vehicle during an altercation and opened the door where his girlfriend was seated. Mayfield, upon exiting the driver’s seat, confronted Williams, which shortly led to both men drawing firearms.

Williams was shot and fell in the parking area, while Mayfield managed to reach the urgent care facility before his collapse. The exchange of gunfire resulted in fatal injuries for both men.

Security footage and witness accounts confirmed the series of actions described by police, affirming the swift escalation of violence between the parties involved. The woman, caught in the middle of the confrontation, was unharmed.

Collaborating closely with the Columbus Police Department, Starkville authorities are examining the clearer sequence of how the individuals ended up in Starkville, with motives and the progression of events under investigation.

Addressing early fears, Lovelady clarified earlier speculations surrounding an active shooter, confirming they were inaccurate reports spawned from initial confusion at the crime scene.

The local police expressed gratitude towards the community, State Urgent Care staff, emergency responders, and the various departments that coordinated during the incident. The investigation remains active, with Starkville Police committed to updating the public as new details emerge.
