KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A tragic scene unfolded in a northland Kansas City home early Sunday morning, where three women were found fatally shot, prompting a swift law enforcement response and a series of charges against the suspected gunman. Armando Navarro, identified by authorities, faces multiple counts including three of first-degree murder and several other charges related to armed criminal action, assault, and animal cruelty.
The unsettling discovery occurred after officers were alerted to gunfire near the intersection of NW 65th Street and Green Hills Road around 12:45 a.m. Upon arrival, they received guidance from a gravely injured fourth victim who had managed to escape and seek assistance nearby. This victim’s testimony led police to the house where the deceased women were found, each succumbing to gunshot wounds.
The deceased have been identified as 49-year-old Jodie Hopcus, 73-year-old Sherri Duncan, and 24-year-old Hailey Hopcus. Found alongside them was a dog that had also been shot dead. The surviving victim identified Navarro as the assailant, who allegedly fled the crime scene in a 2020 Ford Expedition owned by one of the victims. The vehicle and Navarro were later located in Abilene, Kansas where he was apprehended.
Further deepening the horror of the events, charging documents revealed a distressing 911 call made before Navarro’s capture. On the call, a male reported he had spoken with Navarro who shockingly confessed to killing everyone in the household.
During a Monday morning news conference, Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd expressed the heartbreaking nature of the crime, identifying the victims as three generations of one family: a daughter, her mother, and her grandmother. Zahnd also noted the complex relationship dynamics involved, highlighting that Navarro was the ex-boyfriend of Jodie Hopcus, the middle victim. It appears tensions had been building long before the catastrophe, as Jodie had previously ended the relationship and asked Navarro to vacate the home.
