The incident occurred during the peak morning commute, between the Diva and Kopar railway stations, as passengers crowded onto the trains.
Authorities indicated that the disaster may have stemmed from commuters hanging onto the footboards of two overcrowded trains, which passed each other at high speed. As their backpacks brushed against one another, several individuals lost their grip and fell onto the tracks. Eyewitnesses reported a chaotic scene as the rush of commuters intensified during the busy hour.
In response to the tragedy, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed heartfelt condolences and pledged swift action to assist the victims and their families. A thorough investigation into the accident has been launched by railway officials to ascertain the specific circumstances leading to the incident.
A police spokesperson emphasized the challenges posed by the heavy passenger volume, noting that many people were standing at the open entrances of the shifting train. Reports confirmed that at least ten individuals fell from the vehicle, with four pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital.
Passengers who witnessed the fall were able to provide details to railway officials, stating that the collisions between commuters on the footboards likely contributed to the fatalities. By 9:50 a.m., ambulances had transported all injured individuals to nearby hospitals in Kalwa and Thane.
