Firozabad, India — A devastating explosion at a firecracker storage facility in the Naushera neighborhood of Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, resulted in the deaths of four individuals, including a three-year-old girl and a woman, while injuring six others, authorities reported on Tuesday. The blast, which occurred Monday night, has sent shockwaves through the community, raising concerns about safety regulations and enforcement.
The explosion effectively demolished the structure housing the fireworks, trapping several individuals under the rubble. Local police, alongside fire department teams and district administrative officials, have been tirelessly working at the scene to rescue those still trapped and to assess the extent of the damage.
Among the deceased identified at the district hospital were Meera Devi, 45, Aman, 20, Gautam Kushwaha, 18, and the young Kumari Ichha, aged only three. The injured parties are currently receiving medical care at a local hospital.
In response to the tragic event, Deepak Kumar, Inspector General for the Agra range, who personally surveyed the damage, highlighted the ongoing rescue efforts. “Approximately ten people were rescued from the wrecked building, sadly four of them were deceased,” Kumar explained. His statement underscored the underlying uncertainty, as officials were concerned that additional victims might still be buried beneath the debris.
The local community described the moment of the catastrophe as a sudden and loud explosion around 10:30 pm, which led to the immediate collapse of the building’s walls. Most of the victims, including those fatally injured, were members of the same family living in the facility.
This tragic incident brings to light the issues surrounding the storage and handling of firecrackers, particularly in densely populated areas where such practice is usually banned. Questions are now being raised about how the facility was allowed to operate contrary to regulations.
In response to these concerns, Kumar remarked on the ongoing investigations, indicating that a thorough probe would determine the legality of the factory’s operation and the adherence to fire safety norms.
Moreover, the deployment of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been requested to hasten the rescue operations and help facilitate a quicker recovery process from this calamity.
