Tragedy Strikes Outer Banks: Grieving Mother Remembers Son as Community Mourns Shooting at Local Pier

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. — Grief enveloped a community as families and friends remembered Zane Hughes, a 19-year-old whose life was tragically cut short last week. Hughes was shot and killed on Thursday at the Avalon Fishing Pier, a popular landmark in the Outer Banks, sparking mourning and calls for justice.

Nicole Hassell, Zane’s mother, gave an emotional account of her son during a recent media interview. “My heart aches for all the moments that will never happen,” she shared, reflecting on the profound loss. She expressed sorrow towards the unnamed suspect, urging him to reconsider his actions in a tearful message, lamenting the decision that led to her son’s death.

Describing Zane as irreplaceable, Hassell recounted his vibrant personality and the mark he left on those around him. As a student at UNC Charlotte, following his graduation from First Flight High School, Zane was known for his infectious laughter and spirited nature. “He brought joy to every room he entered, radiating humor and warmth,” his mother recalled. “Zane embodied courage, ambition, and integrity.”

The fatal shooting also injured a 15-year-old boy, who was shot in the thigh. Recovering from his injuries, he returned to the pier the following day, a testament to the resilience of the traumatized community. Local law enforcement has initiated an investigation, affirming their commitment to ensuring justice for the victims.

Authorities have charged a 16-year-old, Henry Hargis, with first-degree murder in connection with the incident. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention facility in Greenville, with a court appearance scheduled for August 12. The case has raised concerns over youth violence and community safety in the area.

As the investigation continues, Hassell plans to return to Kill Devil Hills, hopeful that the community can find some semblance of healing despite enduring such a tragic loss. “Zane’s spirit will continue to shine through those who loved him,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of cherishing memories during this heartbreaking time.
