Tragedy Strikes Lawrence: Two Arrested for First-Degree Murder Following College Bar Shooting that Left One Dead and Another Critically Injured

LAWRENCE, Kan. — A tragic shooting outside a popular bar near the University of Kansas has claimed the life of an 18-year-old and left another teenager seriously injured. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday on the patio of the Jayhawk Cafe, commonly known as “The Hawk,” as the night was nearing its conclusion.

The deceased victim has been identified as Aidan Knowles, while his best friend, 16-year-old Brady Clark, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Police reports indicate both teens had been at the bar prior to the shooting, which unfolded just before closing time. Brady Clark’s family has described their son and Knowles as innocent bystanders who fell victim to a senseless act of violence, expressing their gratitude for the community’s support during this harrowing time.

“The quick response from emergency services undoubtedly saved our son’s life, but we are devastated that Aidan didn’t survive,” the Clark family said in a statement. They requested privacy as they focus on Brady’s recovery.

Aidan Knowles’ father, Bobby Knowles, took to social media to express his grief, stating that the two teenagers were merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. He thanked the first responders for their dedicated efforts while highlighting the overwhelming nature of the tragedy.

In connection with the shooting, police have arrested two suspects, both 18 years old: Caiden Clem and Daitron Daniels. Clem faces charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault, while Daniels is charged with first-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder, and aggravated assault. Both are currently being held at the Douglas County Jail.

This incident marks a troubling pattern; police records indicate the establishment has been the site of at least 59 calls over the past year, predominantly related to fights and disturbances. The bar has taken proactive steps, conducting 14 checks aimed at enforcing liquor regulations and addressing underage drinking.

The Hawk released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the shooting, and emphasized their commitment to cooperating with authorities. “The safety of our guests and staff is our foremost concern,” the statement read, adding thanks for the swift actions of first responders and the support from the community.

As both families grapple with their loss and the ongoing recovery process, the community of Lawrence is left to reflect on the challenges of ensuring safety in nightlife environments, prompting discussions about the responsibility of local establishments in preventing violence.
