Pasadena, California — More than three years after the tragic shooting of a 13-year-old boy, two individuals have been charged in connection with his death. Iran Moreno was playing video games at home on November 20, 2021, when a stray bullet pierced his window, fatally wounding him. Authorities have stated that Moreno was not the intended target of the gunfire.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced the charges on Friday against Muhammad Abdul-Malik, 38, who is alleged to have fired the fatal shot, and Teraeja Laquanna Flemmings, 31, who is accused of being the getaway driver. In addition to murder charges, Abdul-Malik faces a separate charge for possession of a firearm by a felon. If convicted, both could face life in prison.
“The violence that took this young boy’s life is not only tragic, but also wholly unacceptable,” Hochman remarked. He emphasized the emotional toll this incident has taken on families and stressed the importance of holding the responsible parties accountable for their actions.
The breakthrough in the Moreno case occurred in June when Pasadena police released enhanced surveillance images that provided crucial leads about the suspects. Lieutenant Carlo Montiglio noted that advancements in technological tools have played a significant role in moving the investigation forward. Additionally, detailed sketches of the suspects were published, which contributed to their arrest.
Abdul-Malik was apprehended on July 11 in Orlando, Florida, where he is currently awaiting extradition. Flemmings was arrested shortly after, on July 16, in San Fernando. Her arraignment is set for the coming days. While the motives behind the shooting are still unclear, authorities have indicated there is no evidence to suggest gang involvement.
Community response to the shooting has been profound. Shortly after Moreno’s death, a vigil was held to honor victims of gun violence. Local officials, including Pasadena Deputy Chief Cheryl Moody, have vowed to enhance efforts to combat the rising tide of gun violence in the city. “The threat of gun violence poses a serious danger, and we are dedicated to removing firearms from those who intend to harm others,” Moody stated.
