The shooting followed an argument near one of Milwaukee’s busiest nightlife areas.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A 17-year-old was wounded in a shooting late Monday near Brady Street, and Milwaukee police said Tuesday they were still searching for the person or people responsible.
The shooting was reported around 11 p.m. May 18 near Cambridge Avenue and Brady Street, close to Farwell Avenue on the city’s east side. Police said the teen went to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
Police said the shooting appeared to stem from an argument between people who did not know each other. No arrest had been announced Tuesday, and officials had not released details about a weapon, a suspect description or the number of shots fired.
Residents described hearing gunfire in a neighborhood more often linked to dining and nightlife than violence. One neighbor told WISN the sound echoed through the house and first seemed like it could have been a vehicle backfiring. Police later blocked off the area while officers searched for evidence.
Jarred Wolfe, who said he previously worked as a bouncer on Brady Street, said he was surprised a teenager was in the area late on a weeknight. Wolfe said safety should remain a priority for police, city officials and nearby businesses as crowds grow during the summer.
The Brady Street Business Improvement District said it was concerned about the shooting and hoped the teen would recover. The group said it was coordinating with Milwaukee police, the alderman’s office and private security partners to support safety for residents, visitors and businesses.
Milwaukee police said they planned an increased presence on Brady Street heading into Memorial Day weekend. The department has not said when it expects to release more information. The investigation remains active, and no motive beyond the reported argument has been confirmed.
