Teen Found Stabbed After Telling Police She Escaped Basement

Detectives have not identified the basement, a suspect or what happened before the injured 15-year-old was found on Belle Avenue.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Police searched parts of a northwest Baltimore neighborhood after a wounded 15-year-old girl told officers she had escaped from a nearby basement before an unknown man stabbed her, leaving investigators trying to determine where the attack happened and who was responsible.

The investigation began around 9:30 p.m. Oct. 22, when officers responded to the 3800 block of Belle Avenue for a reported stabbing. They found the teenager receiving medical treatment for a stab wound. Police said she told officers she had escaped from a basement in the area and had been stabbed by a man she did not know. Authorities have not publicly identified the property she described.

The lack of a confirmed location has left detectives with major unanswered questions. Police have not said how the teenager entered the basement, how long she may have been there or what happened before she escaped. They also have not disclosed whether investigators believe she was stabbed in the basement, at another location or after leaving the property.

Residents told FOX45 News that officers searched the area Thursday night. Mehmet Guclu, who lives along Belle Avenue, said police came to his home and inspected his basement and other rooms while looking for a suspect. Guclu said he allowed officers inside and was surprised by the level of police activity on the block.

Police have not publicly linked Guclu’s home or any other searched residence to the stabbing. Authorities also have not said how many properties were checked, whether searches were voluntary or conducted under other legal authority, or whether investigators recovered evidence from any of the locations. No resident whose home was reported searched has been publicly identified by police as a suspect.

The investigation drew particular attention from neighbors because several residents described Belle Avenue as a place where they had not previously encountered similar violence. A woman identified by FOX45 as Shelley, who said she has lived on the block for 37 years, described the incident as highly unusual for the area. Longtime resident Veronica Davis also said she had not experienced anything comparable there.

Those reactions offer a picture of the neighborhood’s response but do not answer the central questions confronting investigators. Police have released no suspect description beyond the girl’s report that the attacker was an unknown male. They have not announced an arrest, identified a possible motive or explained whether detectives believe anyone else was involved.

The teenager remained sedated Friday, police said, and was expected to survive. Authorities have not released her identity, consistent with the limited public information surrounding the juvenile victim. Her condition also may affect how quickly detectives can obtain additional information about what occurred, although police have not described their investigative plans.

Surveillance video obtained by FOX45 showed an ambulance arriving on Belle Avenue around the time of the police response. Beyond confirming emergency activity on the block, publicly available reporting has not established the precise location of the alleged basement or the sequence of events leading to the stabbing.

The case remains under investigation. Detectives have asked anyone with information to contact police at 410-396-2466. As of Saturday, police had not publicly announced an arrest or identified the basement the teenager said she escaped from.
