Jasmine Gill vanished amid divorce and custody proceedings before investigators identified her remains roughly 70 miles from her Sacramento home.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A missing-person investigation involving a 30-year-old Sacramento nurse became a homicide case after burned human remains discovered in El Dorado County were identified as hers, leading authorities to arrest her husband on a murder charge.
Jasmine Gill was last seen at her Sacramento residence Sept. 30 and was reported missing by her cousin Oct. 4, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. By then, investigators in El Dorado County had already encountered human remains on Oct. 1. Authorities later confirmed that the remains were Gill’s, connecting the remote discovery to the Sacramento disappearance and giving detectives a homicide investigation that crossed county lines.
Gill was a registered nurse and the mother of an 8-month-old child, according to published reports. Investigators said she and her husband, Gurinder Gill, 28, were involved in an ongoing divorce and child custody dispute when she disappeared. Authorities have not said that the dispute was the motive for her death, and they have not publicly announced a motive at all.
The investigation took another turn when detectives questioned Gurinder Gill about his wife’s whereabouts. The sheriff’s office said he told them U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken Jasmine Gill into custody while she was checking the mail at their home. Detectives contacted ICE, which said no enforcement action had occurred at the residence. Investigators then identified what the sheriff’s office described as several inconsistencies in his statements.
Authorities have not publicly provided a full timeline of Jasmine Gill’s movements after she was last seen or explained how her remains reached El Dorado County. SFGate reported that firefighters responding to smoke near Pollock Pines encountered the remains in a remote wooded area. Officials also have not disclosed her cause of death, leaving significant details about the killing outside the public record as the criminal case proceeds.
Homicide detectives eventually obtained an arrest warrant for Gurinder Gill. He was taken into custody Oct. 14, two weeks after his wife was last seen, and detectives searched two residences associated with him. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said he was booked into the county’s Main Jail on a murder charge and was not eligible for bail.
A criminal complaint filed in Sacramento County alleges that Gill killed his wife with malice aforethought, according to SFGate. The charge is an allegation and does not establish guilt. Prosecutors must prove the case in court, and law enforcement has so far released only part of the evidence detectives say led them from the initial missing-person report to Gill’s arrest.
Fox News reported that Jasmine Gill was born in India and that her mother remains there. A fundraiser established for her family described her nursing career and sought assistance with returning her remains to India and supporting her young son. The family’s account offers a picture of the personal loss behind a case that authorities have largely described through the chronology of the investigation.
Major questions remain unanswered, including how Jasmine Gill died, when authorities believe she was killed and how her remains were transported from the Sacramento area to El Dorado County. Investigators have not publicly disclosed those details or announced additional arrests as the murder case against Gurinder Gill continues.
