Hero Dad Shoots Suspected Carjacker While Shielding His Daughter

Police said one suspected attacker was killed after armed men opened fire on a family leaving its Pinetown home.

PINETOWN, South Africa — A father traveling with his two children returned fire on suspected carjackers outside his home in Pinetown, killing one man after the attackers opened fire on the family’s vehicle, police said.

The Oct. 9 confrontation on Lea Place drew widespread attention after dashcam footage circulated on social media nearly two weeks later. Police said the family was leaving its property when a white vehicle carrying unidentified men blocked their path in what authorities described as an attempted carjacking. The attackers opened fire, and the father shot back, fatally wounding one suspected attacker, according to police spokesperson Lt. Col. Paul Magwaza.

The remaining suspects fled in their vehicle, Magwaza said. Pinetown police opened cases involving attempted murder and attempted carjacking, along with an inquest into the death. Police have publicly confirmed one fatality. Other claims circulating online about additional deaths have not been confirmed by authorities.

Video of the encounter shows the family’s vehicle near the entrance to a residential property as another vehicle approaches and stops nearby. Men can then be seen moving toward the family’s vehicle before gunfire begins. The father appears to return fire as the confrontation unfolds, while his children remain close to the scene. The footage does not establish the identities of the attackers or resolve all of the circumstances being examined by investigators.

The shooting occurred as the father and his children were driving out of their yard, police said. Local reporting said one child was in the vehicle while another was near the property entrance during the attack. The footage has spread widely online because of the speed of the confrontation and the presence of the children, but police accounts remain the clearest basis for what has been officially established.

Andreas Mathios of Marshall Security praised the father’s response and said he appeared to act to protect his family after the attackers began shooting. Mathios characterized the confrontation as self-defense. Police, however, have not announced a final legal finding about the father’s conduct, and the opening of an inquest means authorities are still formally examining the fatal shooting.

Some accounts published after the video went viral included more specific claims about the number of shots fired, injuries suffered by the father and what happened to the fleeing suspects. Those details have not all been independently confirmed by police. Authorities have said only that one suspected attacker was fatally wounded and that the others escaped in their vehicle.

The father’s identity has also been reported by some international outlets, but local police statements describing the case did not publicly identify him. The children have not been identified in official accounts. Their names are being withheld here because they are minors and are not accused of wrongdoing.

The incident remains under investigation by Pinetown police. Authorities have not publicly identified the man who was killed or the suspects who escaped, and no confirmed arrests or charges related to the attempted carjacking had been announced in the accounts reviewed as of Friday.
