Police are investigating a possible retaliatory motive after witnesses reported several masked gunmen firing into a crowd on Commerce Street.
TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma police have made a fourth arrest in the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy inside a downtown parking garage, expanding an investigation in which authorities say as many as five masked gunmen may have opened fire.
The latest person arrested is a juvenile male who was taken into custody Wednesday, Oct. 21, and booked into Remann Hall, according to police. Three adults arrested earlier — Jose Campos, 18; Davion Campos, 20; and Alina Guillen, 19 — have been charged in connection with the killing of Josiah Midgyett and pleaded not guilty during a court appearance Wednesday.
The investigation began after Tacoma officers were sent to the 1100 block of Commerce Street at about 2:23 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, following reports of gunfire. Officers found a juvenile male suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds. Police and Tacoma Fire Department personnel attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses later told investigators that up to five masked gunmen had opened fire in the parking garage, where a group of people had gathered. The number of people described by witnesses has left open the possibility that investigators are still working to identify everyone who may have participated. Police have declined to say whether they are actively seeking additional suspects.
Detectives developed probable cause to arrest two adult men and one adult woman as the investigation progressed. Police said one man was arrested Monday in east Tacoma, while another man and a woman were arrested in Yelm. All three were initially booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder.
Jose Campos was later charged with first-degree murder, nine counts of assault and firearms-related offenses. Davion Campos and Guillen also face murder and assault charges. The charges are allegations, and all three adult defendants entered not guilty pleas.
Investigators are also examining whether the garage shooting was retaliation for violence that occurred a day earlier. During the adult defendants’ court hearing, a prosecutor said Jose Campos had suffered a gunshot wound to his hand the night before Midgyett was killed. Prosecutors said that sequence led detectives to consider retaliation as a possible motive. The allegation has not been established as fact at trial.
Surveillance video is part of the investigation, according to accounts of court records and Wednesday’s hearing. Prosecutors said video showed Jose Campos armed and wearing a mask. Another local report said investigators obtained footage showing suspects around the garage before and after the shooting. Authorities have not publicly released a complete account of the evidence against each defendant.
Investigators arrested the juvenile Wednesday, making him the fourth person taken into custody since the shooting. His name was not released in the reports reviewed, consistent with his juvenile status. KIRO 7 reported that he was being held at Remann Hall and was arrested in connection with Midgyett’s death.
The adult defendants remain held under high bail set by the court: $5 million each for Jose and Davion Campos and $1.5 million for Guillen. The homicide investigation remains active as police continue trying to determine how many people participated and what led to the gunfire.
