Teen Football Player Killed In Late-Night Chicago Shooting

Police said no arrests had been made as Area Two detectives continued the investigation.

CHICAGO, Ill. — A 14-year-old boy was shot to death late Thursday in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side, where officers found him wounded in the 8000 block of South Carpenter Street, Chicago police said.

Police said officers were called just after 11:30 p.m. for a report of a person shot. They found the boy with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. Chicago Fire Department crews treated him at the scene before taking him to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office had not publicly identified the teen as of Friday. Police said the events that led to the shooting were not immediately clear. Officers taped off an alley near the scene as investigators looked for evidence and worked to determine who fired the shots.

Area Two detectives are leading the case. Police said no one was in custody and no arrests had been announced. Authorities also had not released a possible motive or suspect description.

The boy was part of the Midwest Hawks Youth Football program, which said he had been beloved by his parents, brothers and former teammates. The program said his memory would remain part of the Hawks family and that a vigil was expected in the coming days.

Community activist Pastor Donovan Price went to the scene Thursday night. “When a child is shot, there are so many, so many people affected,” Price said. He said classmates, teachers, coaches and family members all feel the loss after a child is killed.

Neighbors said they heard several gunshots before police arrived. One nearby resident, Marilyn Jones, said the killing was heartbreaking because the boy was only 14 and “barely beginning to live his life.”

The investigation remained open Friday, with detectives still reviewing evidence from the block and seeking more information about what happened before the shooting.
