Pomona Hallway Shooting Leaves Young Woman, Good Samaritan Neighbor Dead

Police identified the suspect as Robert Galtman after a pursuit that ended in Lancaster.

POMONA, Calif. — A 48-year-old Pomona man was arrested Thursday after police said two people were shot and killed in the hallway of an apartment building on East Monterey Avenue.

Pomona police said officers responded at about 3:22 p.m. to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex in the 100 block of East Monterey Avenue. Officers found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds. Los Angeles County firefighters tried to save them, but both died at the scene.

The suspect was identified as Robert Galtman, 48. Authorities said he fled in a black Kia sedan after the shooting. The California Highway Patrol later found the car on the northbound 5 Freeway near Roxford Street. When the driver did not stop, the chase began shortly before 5:30 p.m. and continued through northern Los Angeles County.

Investigators later identified one victim as 24-year-old Veronica Lopez. Her family said she had been trying to leave a relationship with Galtman and described the shooting as tied to domestic violence. The second victim was identified in local reports as Robert Brady, a neighbor and father of two who was believed to have stepped in during the dispute.

The chase moved from the 5 Freeway to Lake Hughes Road and into Lancaster. Shortly after 7 p.m., officers used a spike strip, flattening at least two tires. Minutes later, a CHP officer used a PIT maneuver near 20th Street West and West Avenue K. Galtman got out of the car and was taken into custody.

Police said there was no known threat to the public after the arrest. Galtman remained in custody with bail reported at $3.1 million. He was expected to face arraignment Tuesday, June 23. Pomona police said the Major Crimes Unit is continuing the investigation.

As of Saturday, investigators had not released a full account of what led to the gunfire. The next key step is Galtman’s scheduled court appearance on June 23.
