Suspect Dead, Two Hospitalized After Stabbing Near USF

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said the suspected attacker and one victim were USF students.

TAMPA, Fla. — A double stabbing at an apartment complex near the University of South Florida is now tied to a separate death investigation nearby, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said the first call came at 4:26 a.m. Wednesday from Halo 46 Apartments on North 46th Street. A man told dispatchers that he and another person had been stabbed. Both victims survived and were listed in stable condition after being taken for medical treatment.

The sheriff’s office said the suspect and one victim are students at USF. University police said they were roommates. A second victim had no connection to the university, officials said. Authorities had not explained what led to the violence or how the second victim became involved.

Later Wednesday, deputies opened a death investigation at 3600 East Fletcher Avenue, where Union on Fletcher apartments are located. The sheriff’s office said detectives believe the person found dead there is the stabbing suspect. Officials said the person’s name would be released after family notification.

Residents at Halo 46 described a tense scene after deputies arrived. Student Brooke Lahciev said she saw yellow tape, police cars and blood outside the building. Mackenzie Miller, another student, said she noticed bloodstains running through a hallway and down a stairwell after leaving her apartment.

The sheriff’s office said detectives are still building the timeline between the early-morning stabbing and the later death investigation. Officials had not released the cause of death, the manner of death or details about how the deceased person was located.

USF police said the campus community was not under threat. Deputies said all people involved in the case had been identified and accounted for, and the investigation remained active Wednesday evening.
