Sunray, Texas – City officials in Sunray are navigating recovery and planning future safety improvements following a grain elevator explosion in March that injured five people and severely disrupted the community’s natural gas service. The incident, which inflicted significant damage on one of the city’s main natural gas lines, occurred at a facility managed by Skyland Grain.
In response to the crisis, the natural gas department managed to install a temporary line around the damaged elevator to restore service to residents last Friday. However, ongoing discussions indicate that this provisional setup might soon be converted into a permanent solution to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
Council Member Mason Overstreet commented on the complexity of making the temporary line permanent, noting that the process involves securing permits and extensive planning. “We’re just gonna have to sit down and figure out exactly what we’re gonna do for that to turn into our main line again,” Overstreet said. He suggests that while the task is daunting, it’s necessary for the line to eventually become the city’s new primary conduit for natural gas.
Moreover, the community is keen to engage with Skyland Grain to discuss the future of the stricken structure and ensure such incidents can be mitigated. Despite attempts to reach out, the city has yet to receive specific plans from the company. “Really haven’t heard anything from them, so we’d really like to have some answers and ask some questions. So, hopefully eventually, they’ll come talk to us, but that’s up to them,” Overstreet added.
A representative from Skyland Grain indicated that the firm is collaborating closely with engineers, safety experts, and governmental bodies. “We are working closely with engineers, safety experts, and government officials to ensure the safety and well-being of our employees and the community throughout the process,” the spokesperson stated via email.
To further address these issues and update the public, Sunray will host a public emergency council meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Officials plan to discuss the city’s recovery from the explosion and outline steps towards bolstering its infrastructure resilience.
This incident has brought to the forefront the vulnerabilities in small community infrastructures when faced with industrial accidents. As recovery efforts continue, Sunray officials are poised to take decisive action to enhance safety measures and prevent future service interruptions, ensuring both the well-being of its residents and the long-term sustainability of its utilities.
