Siblings’ Preliminary Exam Delayed in Eastpointe Foot Locker Shooting Due to Hospitalized Witness

EASTPOINTE, Mich. — Two siblings charged in relation to a deadly shooting outside a Foot Locker in Eastpointe will have their preliminary exams postponed due to the hospitalization of a surviving victim who is unable to testify. Lakylia Taylor faces second-degree murder charges, while her brother, Dejuan, is accused of fleeing the scene with a firearm and ammunition.

The incident occurred on May 3, during the afternoon, when an argument erupted in the parking lot of the shoe store on Eight Mile. According to Macomb County Prosecutor Pete Lucido, the dispute escalated physically, leading Dejuan to be subdued by members of another group. In response, Lakylia allegedly retrieved a weapon from the scene and opened fire, resulting in two fatalities and injuries to others, including herself.

Survivors of the shooting have been receiving medical attention, including one who recently underwent surgery, hindering their ability to participate in the pending legal proceedings. The prosecutor stated that this delay in testimony could potentially impact the case’s progression.

Dejuan Taylor, age 21, is charged with several offenses, including tampering with evidence and larceny. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Lakylia is facing several serious charges, including assault with intent to kill in addition to the murder charge. Prosecutorial sources indicate that the siblings were involved in attempting to conceal the evidence by fleeing the scene and taking possession of a weapon that had fallen during the chaos.

The shooting has raised safety concerns within the community, prompting discussions on the broader issues of gun violence and youth engagement in conflicts. Local leaders and activists have called for more preventative measures and community outreach efforts to address the underlying issues that lead to such violent altercations.

The siblings are next scheduled in court on July 18, where the judicial process will further unfold as they await the opportunity to establish their defense in light of the exceptional circumstances surrounding the victim’s hospitalization.

As the hearings approach, the community remains on edge, reflecting on the tragic events that occurred just months prior and the need for ongoing dialogue regarding safety and conflict resolution.
