GONDA, India — A domestic dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district has escalated alarmingly, with accusations of violent threats echoing a notorious local crime. The confrontations involve a government engineer, his wife, and her alleged paramour, unraveling in a series of incidents that have led to police intervention.
The conflict centers on Dharmendra Kushwaha, a junior engineer with Jal Nigam, and his wife, Maya Maurya. The couple, married since 2016, has seen their relationship deteriorate amidst allegations of infidelity and abuse. The situation worsened following Kushwaha’s discovery of what he claims was an intimate encounter between his wife and Neeraj Maurya, a relative employed in constructing the couple’s house.
The relationship between Maya and Neeraj reportedly deepened after Neeraj’s wife succumbed to COVID-19. The tensions reached a critical point when, on July 7, 2024, Kushwaha alleges he was assaulted by the pair when he confronted them. In subsequent months, the disputes intensified, culminating in Maya’s alleged threat to dismember Kushwaha and dispose of his body parts in a drum, reminiscent of a grisly murder case in nearby Meerut.
Maya, however, paints a different picture of their marriage. She accuses her husband of ongoing harassment and claims that he forced her to undergo multiple abortions. According to Maya, it was Kushwaha’s abusive behavior in July 2024 that drove her to seek help from a women’s police station. She alleges further that Kushwaha initiated divorce proceedings and expelled her from their home.
These mutual accusations came to a head in late March 2025, when Maya and Neeraj allegedly assaulted Kushwaha and his mother, adding to the litany of complaints filed with local authorities. In response, police are now scrutinizing security footage and conducting a thorough investigation into the tangled web of claims and counterclaims.
This case has caught the attention of local law enforcement, with multiple legal proceedings involving the couple currently active. Vivek Trivedi, the station house officer at Kotwali Police Station, confirmed the complex legal situation, reflecting the deeply personal and increasingly public nature of the feud.
