Bathinda, India — Authorities have initiated an investigation into a brutal attack on a Zimbabwean university student, raising concerns about safety for international students in the region. The incident occurred as 22-year-old Ziweya Leeroy, a newcomer studying Radiology and Imaging Technology at Guru Kashi University, found himself in a life-threatening situation.
The police have filed a case against four individuals, including a university security guard, following the grievous assault. A report submitted by Assistant Sub-Inspector Des Raj lists several serious charges, including attempted murder, unlawful restraint, and rioting with deadly weapons. The accused have been identified as security guard Dilpreet Singh and three others: Lovepreet Singh, Mangu Singh, and Manpreet Singh.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the altercation began with a confrontation between Leeroy and Dilpreet Singh on August 12. The next day, Leeroy was ambushed outside the university campus. Witnesses reported that he was attacked with baseball bats, sticks, and bladed objects, leaving him critically injured.
Senior Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal confirmed that one suspect, Mangu Singh, has been apprehended. Kondal indicated that the police responded quickly after being alerted to the assault around 4 p.m. Notably, the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle that later crashed and was abandoned. This vehicle has since been secured as part of the ongoing investigation.
Following the attack, Leeroy was first taken to Talwandi Sabo Civil Hospital but was later moved to AIIMS Bathinda due to the severity of his injuries. Medical professionals are currently planning an MRI scan to evaluate his condition further.
