Detectives are seeking witnesses after seven people were shot, one fatally.
CARSON, Calif. — Los Angeles County sheriff’s detectives were seeking witnesses Monday after a street takeover in Carson ended with seven people shot, including one man who died at the scene.
The investigation centers on a busy crowd gathered about 3 a.m. Sunday near Charles Willard Street and Harmon Avenue. Authorities said the shooting happened during an illegal takeover, a kind of gathering where drivers often block intersections to perform stunts while spectators watch.
Deputies from the Carson area responded to reports of gunfire and found three wounded people at the scene. Fire crews treated them there. One man died before he could be taken to a hospital, and two others were transported in critical condition.
As detectives continued checking hospitals, they learned that four additional people had arrived for treatment on their own. Officials said those four victims had injuries that were not life-threatening. The full ages and identities of the wounded had not been released.
No suspect information had been made public by Monday. Sheriff’s officials also had not said whether one person or more than one person opened fire. The motive remained unknown, and investigators had not announced whether any weapon had been recovered.
The crowd is now a key part of the case. Sheriff’s officials said many people were present when the shooting happened, and detectives were trying to locate witnesses who may have seen the gunfire or recorded the takeover on video.
The location, a Carson intersection in Los Angeles County’s South Bay, was left as both a crime scene and a reminder of the risk tied to illegal street events. Such takeovers can draw large groups quickly, then scatter before investigators can identify everyone involved.
By Monday, the case remained open. Detectives were working to confirm the timeline, identify the dead man, interview witnesses and determine what started the shooting.
