Officials said no charges had been announced after the Sunday evening death in Huffman.
HUFFMAN, Texas — Harris County detectives are investigating the death of a young child found unresponsive Sunday evening in a swimming pool at a home on Lago Trace Drive in the Huffman area.
The case centers on how the toddler reached the pool and what happened before deputies were called. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the home around 6:10 p.m. after a report of an unresponsive toddler in the water. The child was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Detective Dustin Davis said at the scene that the child was believed to be 2 years old. He said investigators were interviewing people, photographing the property and documenting the scene. The sheriff’s office said the death was a tragedy and offered condolences to the toddler’s family in a public statement Sunday night.
Several family members were at the home when deputies arrived, Davis said. At least one other child was there and was not injured. Authorities had not released the toddler’s name, and officials had not confirmed the child’s exact age, full circumstances of the drowning or whether any safety barriers were in place around the pool.
No charges had been filed or announced by Monday morning. The sheriff’s office did not say whether the case had been referred to prosecutors. Investigators were expected to continue reviewing statements and scene evidence before determining whether the death was accidental or whether any further action is needed.
The emergency call drew deputies and investigators to the residential block in northeast Harris County as daylight faded Sunday. Scene video showed officers and crime scene personnel near the property while relatives remained nearby. The investigation continued into the evening as deputies tried to piece together the timeline.
The sheriff’s office had not released a new update by Monday morning. The case remains active, with the next milestone likely to be a further statement from investigators once the child’s identity and the circumstances of the pool access are confirmed.
