Parents seek release of teen girls in Seattle police shooting case

Four teens were arrested; detectives are testing a recovered handgun and searching for at least two others.

SEATTLE, Wash. — A Saturday night pursuit that began on Aurora Avenue North escalated when shots were fired from a stolen Dodge Durango at a Seattle police officer on Interstate 5, police said, ending with a PIT maneuver near South 188th Street and four teenagers in custody.

Detectives said Community Response Group officers first spotted the Durango driving fast and erratically in north Seattle. The SUV fled before uniformed units could stop it. Plain police vehicles later found it in south Seattle and called in marked patrol cars. As the Durango headed south on I-5, someone inside fired several rounds at an officer in an unmarked vehicle. No officer was hit, and police did not return fire. The chase moved toward Tukwila/SeaTac, where officers used a precision stop to disable the SUV. Two males ran off; three girls ages 15 to 17 and a 16-year-old boy were detained at the scene.

Investigators recovered a handgun near the SUV and another on the 16-year-old boy during his arrest, according to police. A bystander on I-5 said a bullet punched through her windshield as she drove in freeway traffic. “It feels like it didn’t happen,” driver Oksana Matsegora said, describing ducking as glass broke and fragments landed in her lap. Detective Eric Muñoz said the department would use “every legal power” to find the two who fled. Police transported the Durango to an evidence facility to collect shell casings and other trace material for lab testing.

Authorities booked the four teens into juvenile detention on investigation of first-degree assault, possession of a stolen vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, and attempting to elude. On Monday, all four appeared in juvenile court. A judge ordered two teens with prior juvenile matters to remain in secure detention and released two others to electronic home monitoring. A spokesperson for the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office said one youth had an active warrant in a custodial assault case. Prosecutors are evaluating filings and could bring charges as early as this week. Police also noted that a gunshot victim arrived at a Renton hospital after the incident; investigators have not determined whether that person is tied to the chase.

The pursuit crossed a corridor that often sees quick transitions between freeway and surface streets during police activity. The precision stop occurred near Military Road South and South 188th Street, just off I-5. Officers from multiple agencies and a K-9 team helped search for the two who ran. The officer targeted on the freeway was not injured. Police emphasized that no officers fired their weapons during the incident, and no other motorists were reported hurt. The bystander’s vehicle was impounded for evidence processing, including trajectory and glass analysis.

Parents of two teens spoke in court, asking for release and promising close supervision. “She made a bad decision,” one parent told the judge, adding that the teen had not been in trouble before. Defense attorneys said two teens did not know the vehicle was stolen and felt unable to get out once the chase began. Detectives said their focus remains on identifying who fired the shots and tracing the seized firearms. Ballistics testing will compare recovered casings to the pistol found near the SUV and to any marks on the Durango’s body and glass.

As of Tuesday, detectives are still seeking the two suspects who escaped and awaiting lab results on both guns. Prosecutors are expected to announce charging decisions later this week. Another status hearing for the detained teens could be scheduled if filings are entered before the weekend.
