Outrage Erupts in Hermosa Beach After Disturbing E-Bike Assault on Local Resident

Hermosa Beach, California — A shocking incident involving a group of teenage e-bikers attacking a 56-year-old man has sparked outrage within the coastal community. The police reported that the violence occurred Friday evening near the Hermosa Beach Pier, prompting an immediate backlash from residents and law enforcement alike.

Authorities have identified five juveniles, aged 13 to 15, who participated in the brutal assault, with two of the primary aggressors now in custody. These two teens have been charged with felony assault and are awaiting transfer to Juvenile Hall. Their case will be reviewed for prosecution by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office, according to police.

The assault took place around 8 p.m. when the victim unexpectedly encountered the group. Surveillance footage reveals how the teenagers surrounded him, knocking him to the ground before subjecting him to repeated punches and kicks. Officers responded to a 911 emergency call and transported the victim to the hospital. He has since been released but details regarding his injuries have not been disclosed.

In the days following the attack, the Hermosa Beach Police Department has been in contact with the parents of the involved juveniles, while the community has flooded the department with communications and video evidence from the scene. Local authorities have emphasized their commitment to addressing the troubling behavior exhibited by the teens. “We understand the distress caused by the videos circulating, and we take this matter very seriously,” the department stated in a release.

This incident is part of a growing trend of reckless behavior linked to e-bike riding among teenagers in South Bay communities, including Manhattan Beach and El Segundo. Recent complaints also highlight dangerous activities such as igniting fireworks on the Hermosa Beach Pier and aggressively riding e-bikes on crowded streets.

In response to these escalating concerns, Hermosa Beach introduced an emergency ordinance in June 2024 aimed at regulating e-bike usage. The ordinance mandates that minors don helmets while riding, prohibits operating an e-bike under the influence, and restricts access to certain public areas like the Greenbelt trail. Penalties for violations can include the impounding of e-bikes.

Since the establishment of this ordinance, the police department has issued 40 e-bike citations and impounded 19 bikes as of mid-November. Residents are encouraged to report any additional information related to the recent assault to the Hermosa Beach Police Department at (310) 318-0360.

The recent violence has raised significant concerns among residents, many of whom are calling for increased accountability and protective measures to ensure safety in the community. As discussions continue, local officials seek to address the challenges posed by reckless youth behavior while fostering an environment of safety and trust.
