Daria Serkov, 15, died after a commercial truck struck a bicycle carrying her and another teenager near East 14th Street.
NEW YORK — Police have identified 15-year-old Daria Serkov as the teenager killed when a commercial truck struck a bicycle carrying two girls at a busy East Village intersection Friday night, authorities said.
Serkov, who lived in Manhattan, and a 16-year-old girl were taken to Bellevue Hospital after the crash near East 14th Street and First Avenue at about 9 p.m. Sept. 18. Serkov was pronounced dead at the hospital. The older teenager remained hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.
Police said the two teenagers were riding together on a bicycle as a commercial truck and the bike approached First Avenue. Investigators said a 57-year-old man was driving the truck and remained at the scene after the collision. No arrest had been announced as the investigation continued Saturday.
Later police accounts indicated the 16-year-old was operating the bicycle and Serkov was riding as a passenger. Both the bicycle and truck were traveling along East 14th Street and were making a turn onto First Avenue when the collision occurred, according to information released to news organizations by police.
Early reports about the second teenager’s age differed, with some initial accounts describing her as 13. Updated reporting based on later police information identified her as 16. Authorities have consistently said the surviving teenager was taken to Bellevue Hospital and was in stable condition.
A Citi Bike was found beneath the commercial vehicle after the crash. Police have not publicly released a full reconstruction of the collision or said what investigators believe caused the bicycle and truck to come into contact. The driver was not reported injured.
The collision prompted a large emergency response Friday night as officers and medical crews worked at the intersection. Investigators remained focused on the movements of the truck and bicycle immediately before the crash and on evidence available from the scene.
The NYPD Highway Patrol is investigating. Authorities have not announced charges against the truck driver or released a final determination about responsibility for the crash. The surviving teenager was last reported in stable condition.
