One Killed, Four Wounded at Lawncrest Apartment Party

Police found 17 spent shell casings after gunfire scattered victims across the Hill Creek apartment complex.

PHILADELPHIA — A man was killed and four other people, including two teenagers, were wounded when gunfire broke out during a large gathering at an apartment complex in the city’s Lawncrest neighborhood late Sunday, police said.

Officers stationed near Adams Avenue heard shots coming from the Hill Creek apartment complex at about 11:52 p.m., according to Police Capt. Higginson. The officers entered the complex and began searching for victims as other units and emergency medical crews responded.

Police initially found a teenage boy who had been shot in a leg and an 18-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to a shoulder. Both were taken to a hospital. Police had not released updated information about their conditions Monday morning.

Officers also found a wounded man at the complex. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 12:14 a.m. Monday, police said. His name and age had not been released as of Monday morning.

Two more victims were located in another section of the complex after police received an additional report at about 12:10 a.m. They were identified only as a 16-year-old boy and a 45-year-old man. One had been shot in a leg and the other in an arm, Higginson said.

Both were taken to a hospital. Authorities did not immediately disclose their conditions or specify which victim suffered each injury.

Investigators recovered 17 spent shell casings at the scene. Police believe the shooting happened during a party or another large gathering, but they had not determined what led to the gunfire or whether more than one weapon was involved.

The locations of the victims within the complex suggested that people may have scattered after the shooting began. Police had not announced an arrest, released a description of a suspect or said whether investigators had identified an intended target.

Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage and gathering evidence Monday as they worked to establish the sequence of events. Police had not released further information about the man who was killed or the conditions of the four survivors.
