NYPD Detective Stabbed Repeatedly as Suspects Flee Bronx Attack

Police said the off-duty detective was stabbed repeatedly after two people approached him near his vehicle Friday afternoon in Norwood.

NEW YORK — An off-duty NYPD detective remained in stable condition Saturday after being stabbed repeatedly during a Bronx robbery in which police said two attackers took a chain from him and escaped on a motorized bike.

The 33-year-old detective was attacked at about 1:45 p.m. Friday near East 206th Street and Rochambeau Avenue in the Norwood neighborhood. Investigators initially described the incident as an attempted robbery. Later police information indicated that the attackers removed a chain from the detective before fleeing, turning the investigation into a search involving both a violent assault and a reported theft.

The detective was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi after suffering multiple wounds. Police information reported by local news organizations said he was stabbed seven times, including wounds to his torso and leg. Despite the seriousness of the attack, reports Friday night and Saturday said he was in stable condition.

Investigators believe the confrontation began when the two people approached the off-duty detective near his vehicle. Accounts based on police and law enforcement sources said the chain he was wearing became the focus of the robbery. Authorities have not released a complete public account of how the confrontation unfolded, and details reported during the first hours of the investigation varied as police gathered additional information.

The attackers fled together on a motorized bike, police said. Investigators later released images as part of their effort to identify and locate them. No arrests had been announced by Saturday, and authorities had not publicly released the names of the people being sought.

The injured detective works in the Bronx, according to reports citing sources familiar with his assignment. He was off duty at the time of Friday’s attack. Police did not immediately disclose whether his occupation was known to the attackers or whether it played any role in the encounter.

The stabbing drew a large police response to the Norwood neighborhood, where investigators remained after emergency crews transported the detective to Jacobi. Officers examined the scene and gathered evidence as the search expanded for the two people who had left on the bike.

Some details remained unresolved Saturday. Police had not publicly said whether the attackers had any prior connection to the detective, and authorities had not announced additional charges, identifications or arrests. Investigators continued treating the robbery as an active case while working to establish the complete sequence of events.

The detective continued recovering at Jacobi as the search remained underway. The latest reports described him as stable, while both people sought in connection with the robbery and stabbing remained at large.
