Three people were detained after gunfire erupted Friday afternoon in the parking lot of a restaurant along Mayfield Road.
MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — A man died after being shot Friday afternoon in the parking lot of a Piada Italian Street Food restaurant in Mayfield Heights, where police detained three people they believe were involved in the shooting.
Mayfield Heights police said officers were sent to the restaurant off Mayfield Road at about 4:04 p.m. Oct. 2 after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers found an adult man in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Hillcrest Hospital, where he died. Authorities had not publicly identified him as of Saturday.
The shooting prompted a large police response and an investigation that continued into the evening. Crime scene tape blocked parts of the parking lot while investigators documented the area and examined evidence. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was called to assist Mayfield Heights police, and state agents arrived at the scene before 6 p.m.
Three people were detained in connection with the shooting, according to police. Authorities said they believed the three were involved but had not released their identities or announced criminal charges. Police also had not released information explaining what led to the shooting or describing the relationship, if any, between the man who died and those detained.
Calls to emergency dispatchers captured the confusion as the shooting unfolded. One caller reported that someone appeared to have been shot in the parking lot. Another said multiple gunshots were heard before a person fell. The accounts reflected what witnesses observed in the immediate aftermath but did not establish who fired the shots or why.
Investigators remained at the restaurant Friday evening, photographing evidence markers and examining the parking area. A news crew at the scene observed what appeared to be damage consistent with a bullet strike on a vehicle window. Employees at a business across Mayfield Road also said their building had been struck by a bullet. Authorities had not released a full accounting of the physical evidence recovered at the scene.
The shooting disrupted activity along the busy commercial stretch of Mayfield Road. Piada managers said the restaurant would remain closed for the rest of Friday night and was expected to reopen Saturday. People who work and live nearby described the shooting as unusual for an area they generally consider safe.
Police said they did not believe there were any outstanding suspects and said there was no continuing threat to the public. That assessment did not signal an end to the investigation, which remained active with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Authorities had not released a possible motive, the name of the man who died or the identities of the three detained people as of Saturday. Mayfield Heights police were continuing to seek information as investigators worked to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
