The video, initially shared on the teen’s Instagram account, has sparked outrage and prompted both the Ministry for Primary Industries and law enforcement to take action.
The Ministry for Primary Industries issued a statement confirming they had received multiple complaints about the video, describing the behavior displayed as “unacceptable.” They have committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. The police have also acknowledged that an online report was submitted on January 25, concerning the graphic content depicted in the social media post.
Debra Ashton, the chief executive of Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE), expressed her dismay over the incident, labeling it a “senseless, disturbing, and violent attack on an innocent sea creature.” SAFE has formally lodged a complaint with the Ministry for Primary Industries, urging a swift response to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Ashton further emphasized the urgency of addressing such violent acts towards animals, indicating the potential for those involved in the incident to harm other animals if not apprehended and held accountable. The public has been encouraged to assist in identifying the individuals in the video.
While the Department of Conservation has opted not to comment, stating that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry for Primary Industries, community groups have also reacted. A spokesperson for the Tauranga Sport Fishing Club stated awareness of the incident but denied any affiliation between the individuals in the video and their organization. The club plans to discuss the matter further at a committee level.
Animal welfare organizations, including the SPCA, have been approached for their input on the situation, reflecting the community’s widespread concern for marine life and animal welfare.
