Shawanda Alston, 38, died Tuesday after spending five days hospitalized following a shooting at her Myrtle Avenue home.
BOWIE, Md. — A 38-year-old Bowie woman died Tuesday from injuries suffered in a shooting five days earlier, and authorities said city police are now working with Prince George’s County homicide investigators as the case continues.
Shawanda Alston was declared dead Tuesday afternoon at a local hospital, according to the Bowie Police Department. Police said she was injured Aug. 20 at a home in the 8500 block of Myrtle Avenue. Kimball Alton Hinton Jr., 41, who was arrested after the shooting, remained in custody without bail as of the department’s latest update. Police had not announced new charges following Alston’s death.
Officers were called to the historic Bowie neighborhood at about 4:20 p.m. Aug. 20 for a reported shooting. They found Alston inside the home with a gunshot wound and took her to a hospital in critical condition. Police said a Sig Sauer .380 handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered at the scene.
Hinton was initially charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, three counts of reckless endangerment and additional firearm-related offenses. Those charges were filed while Alston was still alive. Bowie police said after her death that the department was coordinating its investigation with the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit.
Charging documents described the shooting as occurring during an argument between Hinton and Alston about their inability to provide back-to-school supplies for their children. The documents said Alston was sitting on a bed and holding the couple’s 2-month-old child during the dispute. Another child tried to intervene, according to the documents.
The documents said six children were inside the Myrtle Avenue home when the shooting occurred. One of the children called 911 at 4:16 p.m. and reported that her mother had been shot by her father. Hinton called police about two minutes later, according to the records.
When officers arrived, they encountered Hinton outside the home. Charging documents said he told officers that he had shot Alston and that the gun was in the mailbox. Investigators said he later told detectives that he had returned to the bedroom during the argument and fired two rounds. Those statements are allegations contained in court records and have not been proven at trial.
Charging documents also said Hinton was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of previous convictions, including an assault conviction from 2009 and a weapons conviction from 2008. Bowie police said the handgun connected to the Aug. 20 shooting was recovered before Hinton was taken to the Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.
Alston remained hospitalized for five days before her death. Bowie Police Chief Dwayne A. Preston expressed condolences to her family and loved ones in the department’s announcement Tuesday. Police did not release additional investigative findings or announce whether prosecutors would seek revised charges because of her death.
The investigation remains active, with Bowie police and the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit working together. Hinton remains jailed without bail, and any further charging decisions had not been announced by authorities as of Wednesday.
