Mother in Court for Attempted Drowning of Her Three Children

VALRICO, FL – A mother accused of attempting to drown her three young children at a community pool appeared in court for the first time Monday, facing serious charges that have drawn widespread attention.

Shanice Willingham, visibly distraught, sat before the judge as she faced three counts of attempted murder. The incident, which unfolded last week, involved her children, aged 3, 2, and 8 months, and was reportedly broadcast on social media.

The prosecution claims that Willingham dropped her children over a six-foot fence and remained by the pool, allegedly using a life preserver in a way that suggested she intended to harm them. This behavior was reportedly triggered by a family dispute.

During an Instagram live session, Willingham allegedly expressed feelings of despair, claiming her children would be better off elsewhere. Family members, alerted by the live stream, rushed to the scene and managed to rescue the children just in time.

The toddlers were submerged for varying durations, while the infant was underwater for 51 seconds before being saved by a relative who climbed the fence. The defense argues that the state’s interpretation is incorrect, emphasizing Willingham’s lack of criminal history and her mental health struggles.

Court documents reveal that she was experiencing a mental health crisis, having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Despite the defense’s request for a reasonable bond, citing her mental health and family support, the judge denied the request due to potential risks.

This case highlights the challenges of addressing mental health issues within the legal system and underscores the importance of timely intervention and support for those in crisis.
