CHICAGO — A girl was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound at a home in Chicago’s Marquette Park neighborhood, with police saying the circumstances that led to the shooting remained under investigation.
Chicago police officers were called to a home near West 64th and South Mozart streets shortly after midnight. They found the wounded girl there and she was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where authorities said she was in critical condition.
Police had not released the girl’s age as of Saturday morning. Authorities also had not publicly explained what happened before the shooting, who fired the gun or whether investigators believed the gunfire was intentional or accidental.
The limited information left the circumstances of the shooting unclear hours after officers arrived at the Southwest Side home. Police did not immediately identify the girl or provide further information about her medical condition beyond saying she was critically injured.
Investigators did make two potentially significant developments at the scene. Officers took a person of interest into custody and recovered a gun. Police had not publicly identified the detained person, and no charges had been announced in connection with the shooting.
Authorities also had not said whether the recovered gun had been confirmed as the firearm involved in the girl’s injury. Police did not release information about the ownership of the weapon or explain where at the property it was recovered.
No other injuries were immediately reported in the initial police account. Authorities had not released witness accounts or additional details about who was at the home when the shooting occurred.
The investigation is being handled by Area One detectives. As of the latest available update Saturday, the girl remained listed in critical condition, a person of interest was in custody and investigators had not announced charges or publicly established what caused the shooting.
