Maryland State Police Seek New Leads in Unsolved Cases Possibly Linked to Deceased Convicted Murderer

FREDERICK COUNTY, Md. – Maryland State Police are seeking new leads on unsolved homicide cases that may be linked to a convicted murderer who recently confessed to a 2006 case before passing away.

In September 2022, 64-year-old Garry Artman of White Springs, Florida was charged with the murder of Dusty Shuck, a 24-year-old woman whose body was discovered near a rest stop in Frederick County in 2006. He faced charges of first- and second-degree murder, as well as first- and second-degree assault, but passed away on Dec. 28, 2023 while awaiting extradition to Maryland from a Michigan prison.

Prior to the new charges, Artman had already been serving time for a 1996 cold case murder in Michigan. He was interviewed by Maryland State Police in December 2023 while being treated for a terminal illness in a Michigan hospital, during which he confessed to Shuck’s murder as well as other “heinous crimes.”

Shuck’s mother, Lori Kreutzer, expressed relief that Artman had confessed and emphasized the closure it provided. She also shared fond memories of her daughter, who had been living with schizophrenia before her tragic death.

Artman’s transient lifestyle as a truck driver led investigators to believe that there may be additional unsolved cases connected to him. However, a spokesperson for Maryland State Police, Elena Russo, stated that Artman provided very little information about the potential unsolved cases before his death.

The investigation into Artman’s potential involvement in other cases remains ongoing, with Maryland State Police, the FBI, and Michigan law enforcement officers working diligently to bring justice to any additional victims. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit.
