Man Arrested After Chemical Pipe Bomb Explodes on Deputy’s Vehicle During Traffic Stop in Crescent City

CRESCENT CITY, Fla. – Authorities in Putnam County, Florida, recently carried out a raid on the home of a man who was arrested following a chemical pipe bomb explosion during a routine traffic stop by a deputy. The suspect, Charles Legault, 60, is facing charges related to the possession of the explosive device that detonated while he was allegedly involved in trafficking methamphetamines. The raid took place on property located off Riveria Drive near Highway 17 in Crescent City, about 25 miles from the initial traffic stop incident in Palatka.

According to Captain Chris Stallings, this investigation deviates from the norm and is unlike anything he has encountered in his 25 years of policing. The sequence of events unfolded from a standard traffic stop that escalated due to the explosion of a chemical pipe bomb found inside Legault’s vehicle. The deputy inspecting the truck for illicit substances suffered a respiratory injury from the blast but has since been treated and released from the hospital.

Authorities called in the St. Johns County bomb squad to ensure there were no more explosives in the vehicle, discovering a pressure valve with “safe” and “armed” markings on it. In an effort to secure the area, the bomb unit was also dispatched to search Legault’s residence. Detectives meticulously collected evidence, including illegal drugs suspected to be methamphetamines, while detaining the property owner for further investigation.

Legault currently faces charges including possession of a bomb, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and possession of an unregistered gun silencer. Additional drug charges are anticipated as the investigation unfolds. Despite being uncooperative, Legault is being held without bond. Notably, investigators mentioned that Legault’s lack of prior criminal records and absence on social media make him an uncommon suspect in this case.

The situation remains ongoing as authorities work to gather more evidence and unravel the complexities surrounding the chemical pipe bomb explosion that put a deputy’s life at risk during a routine traffic stop. The collaborative effort between local law enforcement and federal agents underscores the seriousness of the situation and the dedication to ensuring public safety in the community.
