Colorado Springs, Colorado – Sunshine Studios in Security-Widefield became a hub of music and remembrance on Friday night as local bands came together to celebrate the lives of Celie Montgomery and Sam Knopp, the two individuals tragically lost in the February shooting at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. The fundraising memorial concert drew hundreds of attendees, with proceeds going to support the families of Montgomery and Knopp.
Amongst the lineup were former bandmates of Knopp, who took to the stage for the debut performance of their band Aeternum. Knopp, described as a skilled technical guitarist with a deep appreciation for the classics, had been instrumental in the band’s formation while pursuing a music major at UCCS. His passion for music and infectious joy while playing left a lasting impact on those around him.
Jose Tinajero, a former bandmate, fondly remembered Knopp’s electrifying presence on stage, noting the young musician’s love for what he was doing. The concert, which included ticket sales and a raffle, raised over $1,000 in support of the families of Montgomery and Knopp. Attendees had the opportunity to purchase a T-shirt bearing the words “legends never die,” alongside the names of the two honored individuals.
In attendance were Knopp’s parents, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support. Sam’s mother, Amy Knopp, shared her appreciation for the community’s solidarity during such a difficult time. Lead singer Kayla Smith of Aeternum highlighted the close-knit nature of the music scene in Colorado Springs, emphasizing the interconnectedness of musicians within the community.
Reflecting on the event, musician Nikki Z from the band Misconduct echoed the sentiment of honor in being part of the memorial concert. He spoke of the collective sense of loss felt by those who knew Knopp and the importance of coming together to celebrate his life through music.
