FORT WORTH, Texas – In January, an explosion at a downtown Fort Worth hotel injured 21 people, with one woman in critical condition. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the incident has sparked legal action and a dispute over responsibility for the blast.
According to recent court filings, Atmos Energy, the North Texas natural gas provider, is seeking exoneration from any responsibility for the explosion. Attorneys for the company claim that evidence will demonstrate the gas leak, which caused the explosion, originated within the Sandman Hotel rather than from an Atmos gas line supplying the hotel.
As lawsuits pile up against the hotel property owner, Northland Developments, Atmos, and hotel management, the legal battle is intensifying. One of the lawsuits alleges negligence in maintaining natural gas utilities and failure to take necessary safety precautions. Despite these claims, Atmos officials maintain that their systems were not involved in the explosion and that their gas supply to the hotel was not leaking.
In their recent court filing, Atmos attorneys are pursuing two objectives. Firstly, they are seeking injunctive relief to preserve evidence at the explosion site, arguing that the evidence will prove the legal responsibility of the hotel property ownership and management. Secondly, they are requesting a declaratory judgment stating that Atmos’ facilities did not cause or contribute to the explosion, absolving them of any liability for damages.
The legal battle continues, with a ruling yet to be made on the case. As the investigation unfolds, the dispute over responsibility for the explosion in downtown Fort Worth remains at the forefront of public attention.
