CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. — A court in Prince George’s County has sentenced 38-year-old Troy Medley to 85 years in prison after he fatally shot 62-year-old Lidia Chinchilla DeCarrillo during a random shooting spree in March 2023. This sentencing concludes a tragic series of events that ended the life of a woman who had just arrived in the United States to mourn her grandson.
Chinchilla DeCarrillo, originally from El Salvador, arrived to attend her grandson’s funeral, after his death in a car accident. The tragic incident occurred shortly after her arrival. As her granddaughter drove her to a family member’s home, their vehicle was targeted by Medley, who unexpectedly exited another vehicle and opened fire outside a residence on Drumm Avenue. Chinchilla DeCarrillo was hit in the back and later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Her granddaughter survived the attack unharmed.
Shortly after the fatal shooting, Medley reportedly continued his violent spree, firing at another residential property before engaging in gunfire with individuals near a convenience store. Fortunately, there were no additional injuries reported in these subsequent attacks.
Medley was convicted on several charges, including second-degree murder and the use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime. In accordance with the gravity of the offenses, the judge’s ruling exceeded state suggested guidelines, emphasizing the severity of Medley’s actions.
State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy, who expressed a deep commitment to prosecuting this case personally, remarked on the disastrous impact of Medley’s actions. “It’s our worst nightmare to see such a senseless act of violence, where an individual shows complete disregard for human life,” Braveboy stated. She further lamented the tragic fate of Chinchilla DeCarrillo, who was simply in the area to grieve a loved one.
