Jackson Triple Homicide Leaves Toddler And Two Sisters Dead

The deaths on Queen Alexandria Lane drew grief from neighbors and city leaders.

JACKSON, Miss. — A south Jackson neighborhood was left shaken after a mother, her sister and her 2-year-old son were found fatally shot Saturday night inside a home on Queen Alexandria Lane.

The killings drew a swift police search, a recovered car and two arrests within days. Officials identified the victims as Keyana Weathersby, 25, her sister Erica Weathersby, 30, and Keyana’s son, Camari Givens. Police said the attack was targeted, but many details remained under investigation.

Officers arrived after a shooting call and found the three victims inside the home. Jackson Police Chief RaShall Brackney said each had been shot more than once. “It takes a coward to slaughter a toddler,” Brackney said as she asked for help from the public. The case quickly spread beyond the block after police said a red 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage belonging to one of the victims had been taken during the crime.

A neighbor, Malik Mayberry, said he saw a car leaving the area before police filled the street with blue lights. He said the moment was hard to understand because the scene had looked normal at first. The car police had sought was later found at Manhattan Park in north Jackson. It was empty when officers recovered it, and investigators said it would be checked for evidence.

By Monday night, police said Cornelius Carter and Jordan Carter, both 28, had been arrested. Brackney said officers tried to stop a vehicle tied to the investigation before a chase began. Both men were later taken into custody. Cornelius Carter faces capital murder and firearm charges. Jordan Carter faces capital murder. Police said the men are not related.

Mayor John Horhn said the city was hurting after what he described as a rise in gun violence and senseless loss of life. He said no family should have to lose loved ones to violence and said police would keep working to find anyone else responsible. Community advocate Sherry Nolen, who lost her son to gun violence in Jackson, said violence leaves families feeling that no place is safe.

The suspects were being held at the Raymond Detention Center as the investigation continued. Police had not released a motive, a full timeline of the shooting or the next court dates as of Tuesday.
