Investigators say the suspect and victim were married and had three children as the case shifted to a murder investigation.
INMAN, S.C. — An investigation into a fatal shooting at an Inman home has widened to include three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child after authorities said the woman charged in the case and the man who died were married and had three children.
Jasmine Marie Sanders, 35, is charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. The murder charge followed the death of 37-year-old Adam Blake Mast after he was shot Wednesday, Aug. 26.
Deputies responded around 7 a.m. that day to a report of a shooting at a home in the 900 block of Gowan Road. They found a man with a single gunshot wound, authorities said. Emergency medical personnel took him to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
Sanders was detained at the home and taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning. Investigators said evidence gathered at the scene and interviews led them to seek arrest warrants charging her initially with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
Mast was pronounced brain dead Thursday, according to the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office. After his death, deputies upgraded Sanders’ attempted murder charge to murder on Friday.
The Seventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office disclosed during a Thursday bond hearing that Sanders and Mast were married and had three children together. The sheriff’s office later said Sanders also faced three counts of unlawful conduct toward a child.
Authorities have not publicly explained what conduct led to the child-related charges or said whether the children witnessed the shooting. Officials also have not released their ages or other identifying information.
Sanders was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Facility and denied bond Thursday. The public information released by authorities does not describe a motive or provide a detailed account of what investigators believe happened before the shooting.
The addition of the child-related counts creates a second focus in the investigation beyond Mast’s death, but authorities have released few details about that portion of the case. The charges are allegations, and the case has not been adjudicated.
The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing. No further information has been released about additional suspects, possible future charges or the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
