Los Angeles, California — A brave intervention by construction workers in the Sawtelle neighborhood of Los Angeles on Friday prevented a potentially devastating assault on a 63-year-old woman. The workers, who were nearby at a construction site, were alerted to the attack by the woman’s cries for help and swiftly responded, successfully halting the violent episode and aiding in the attacker’s arrest.
Rick Dreyfus, the general contractor on the site located along Barry Avenue near the 10 Freeway, described the chaotic scene. He recounted that upon hearing the woman’s desperate screams, a mixture of shock and urgency propelled him and his teammates into action. “Initially, you’re in disbelief, but then instincts kick in, and you know you have to act,” Dreyfus expressed.
Upon reaching the woman, the crew found her pinned to the ground by a naked man who was attempting to sexually assault her. The assailant, later identified by the Los Angeles Police Department as 33-year-old Ishmail Bangura, was quickly scared off by the group of workers, allowing the woman to break free from the harrowing situation.
The police, who responded to the emergency call around 12:40 p.m., arrested Bangura. It was later revealed that the perpetrator had abruptly left his nearby apartment prior to this incident and had struck a 3-year-old child in the face without provocation. Authorities reported that Bangura broke into the woman’s apartment, threatening her life and attempting to rape her before she managed to escape to the outdoors where the construction workers saw and intervened.
Dreyfus vividly recalled the disturbing scene, noting the severe vulnerability of the victim. “She was defenseless, face down, with him on top of her,” he said, emphasizing the urgency of their intervention. The woman was subsequently rescued from further assault thanks to the timely and courageous actions of Dreyfus and his team.
While the victim received immediate attention following the assault and the young child also obtained necessary care, the community is in shock over the violent behavior exhibited by Bangura. The incident raised concerns about safety in the neighborhood, stirring discussions among residents about increasing surveillance and community vigilance.
The local police department has commended the construction workers for their heroic efforts that day. A spokesperson emphasized the crucial role that community members can play in ensuring public safety, stating, “The swift and brave actions of these individuals exemplify the profound impact of community responsiveness in preventing crime.”
Legal proceedings against Bangura are underway as he faces multiple charges, including attempted rape and assault. Community support for the woman and the affected child has been strong, with local leaders and organizations offering resources and counseling services to assist in their recovery.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers that can unexpectedly erupt in daily life and the significant difference that alert and courageous citizens can make in such critical moments. The actions of the Sawtelle construction workers have not only averted a grievous crime but also reinforced the need for community solidarity in the face of emergencies.
