Girl, 12, Shot as Siblings Sit Beside Her

Investigators reported no arrests after bullets struck three vehicles near a Gladeview home, injuring a child inside one car.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Detectives asked Gladeview residents to check security-camera recordings after early morning gunfire damaged three vehicles and wounded a 12-year-old girl sitting in a car with two siblings Tuesday.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called shortly before 1 a.m. to Northwest 64th Street and Northwest 21st Avenue. They found several vehicles struck by bullets, including a silver Hyundai parked outside a home.

Three children were inside the Hyundai when the shots were fired, sheriff’s Detective Samantha Choon said. One bullet struck the 12-year-old girl in the arm. Her two siblings were not injured.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the girl to a nearby hospital in stable condition. A relative later said she had been released from the hospital and was recovering at home.

The children’s mother was outside the vehicle during the shooting and was not hurt. Choon said the number of people near and inside the car made the shooting especially dangerous.

“The mom was outside of the vehicle at the time, so this could have been a very different outcome,” Choon told reporters at the scene.

Investigators had not identified a suspect or announced an arrest by Tuesday. Officials also had not released information about a possible motive, the direction from which the shots were fired or whether any of the vehicles were intended targets.

Neighbor Marie Grimes said she heard repeated gunfire and went to see what had happened. She described hearing about five or six loud sounds and expressed relief that the girl was doing well.

Detectives asked people living near the scene to examine surveillance systems and doorbell cameras for recordings from around the time of the shooting. Such video could help investigators trace a person or vehicle moving through the neighborhood before or after the gunfire.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office continued investigating Tuesday as detectives worked to establish a sequence of events and identify the shooter. No additional injuries had been reported.
