Deadly Gunfire Erupts at Griffin Park, Leaving Father of Seven Dead

Malcolm Freeling, 31, died at a hospital after officers found him wounded at Raymond Head Park late Saturday.

GRIFFIN, Ga. — Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man during a Saturday night gathering at Raymond Head Park, with no suspect or motive publicly identified as of Monday.

Griffin police identified the man as Malcolm Freeling. Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. July 11 to reports of gunfire at the park, located at 800 Anne St. Emergency crews found Freeling suffering from a gunshot wound, authorities said.

Freeling was taken by ambulance to Wellstar Spalding Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Griffin police, Griffin Fire-Rescue and Wellstar Spalding Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene.

The circumstances leading to the gunfire remain unclear. Police have not announced an arrest, released a description of a possible suspect or disclosed whether investigators believe Freeling was specifically targeted.

Authorities also have not said how many people were at the gathering when the shooting occurred. Information about the number of shots fired and whether investigators recovered a weapon or other evidence from the park has not been released.

The shooting prompted a homicide investigation focused on establishing what happened before officers arrived. Detectives are seeking information from people who may have witnessed the shooting or who have other knowledge about the incident.

Freeling’s family said he was married and the father of seven children. An online fundraising campaign was created to help the family with burial expenses following his death.

No direct connection between the gathering and the shooting has been publicly established. Police have not released details about the event underway at the park or said whether any other people were injured.
