FRANKFORT, Ill. — The death of a 2-year-old child at a Frankfort home has left neighbors confronting a tragedy close to home as police continue investigating circumstances that remained largely unexplained Wednesday.
Officers were sent shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court for a report of an unresponsive child, Frankfort police said. The toddler was receiving CPR when officers arrived and was transported to a local hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead. Police said their preliminary investigation points to a domestic-related homicide.
The child’s mother was also found at the property, police said. Authorities said she was attempting to harm herself and was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. Neither the mother nor the child has been publicly identified.
The incident drew officers and detectives to the residential street for hours, with law enforcement activity continuing into the night and Wednesday morning. Police tape surrounded portions of the property as investigators moved through the home. The visible police presence brought the investigation into public view even as officials released relatively few details about what they had found.
Carolyn Pappas, who lives near the home, told local reporters that she was devastated by the child’s death and troubled by the possibility that a family nearby could have been struggling without neighbors realizing it. Her reaction reflected the shock among residents learning that a homicide investigation was unfolding in their community.
Village President Keith Ogle and Police Chief Leanne Chelepis confirmed that authorities were investigating a homicide on Brook Stone Court. Village officials expressed sympathy for those affected and urged community members to support one another as the investigation continues.
What led to the child becoming unresponsive has not been publicly explained. Police have not released a suspected motive, identified a suspect or announced any criminal charges. Authorities also have not disclosed the child’s cause or manner of death or said whether investigators are seeking anyone else in connection with the case.
